Pétrus--Vintage 1953
Pomerol, cru exceptionnel
Corroded and slightly damaged capsules. Slightly bin-soiled labels, one damp-affected, both with slight damage. Levels upper-shoulder. In carton
Tasting Note: At that time jointly owned by the formidable Mme Loubat who had met her match in Jean-Pierre Moueix. To quote Harry Waugh once more, tasting from the barrel: 'Fine in every way, supple with much breed. A beauty'. And so it was: I have not one bad note amongst the eighteen made since 1956. It was an early developer, easy to drink but I think achieving perfection in the 1970s including pretty good but not great Harvey's bottling in 1976. By the mid-1980s, the normal château-bottled wine had maturity, a fairly deep appearance but was showing orange-tinged maturity, its nose and flavour being fully developed. Around this time I noted vanilla, fennel, cedar, spice on the nose. It was not as sweet as expected but full and fleshy. However after the top Médocs, relatively four-square and lacking finesse. In 1990 a lively fragrance, firm though beginning to show a touch of end acidity. Most recently, a perfect magnum at the Eigensatz tasting in Wiesbaden. Last tasted May 1993. At best ***** M.B.
