Contemporary green silk, sides with border tooled in gilt and blind, blue coated endpapers, edges gilt (cloth lost from spine, spine panel perhaps repaired, light fading and soiling.) Provenance: Tsarskoe Selo (stamp; pencilled shelf-mark '63/4') -- 'Printed in Russia' (small import stamp).
FIRST EDITION. THE TSARSKOE SELO COPY, BOUND IN GREEN SILK. General Uvarov (1769-1824) was General Aide-de-Camp on the eve of the palace coup that brought Alexander I to the throne. He distinguished himself at Austerlitz, and Borodino where his action delayed the main French attack. Uvarov was chief of the Guard Cavalry Regiment, the most popular aristocratic regiment, whose uniform Alexander I sometimes wore. SK 1801-1825, vol. 1, 589; Smirdin 2884.
