ENGALYCHEV, Parfenii Nikolaevich, Prince (1769-1829). Slovar fizicheskago i nravstvennago vospitaniia. [Dictionary of Physical and Moral Education.] St. Petersburg: Aleksandr Smirdin, 1827.
2 volumes, 8° (203 x 125mm). Engraved frontispiece portrait. Full red morocco, flat spines gilt, sides with gilt and blind border, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (spines lightly faded, light rubbing). Provenance: Tsarskoe Selo (pencilled shelf-mark '19 3/11'; sold, Plaza Book Auctions, 21-24 November 1933, lot 251) -- 'Printed in Russia' (small import stamp).
FIRST EDITION. IN A HANDSOME, CONTEMPORARY RED MOROCCO BINDING, almost certainly from the Imperial library at Tsarskoe Selo. Engalychev's work is among the earliest Russian attempts to compile pedagogical ideas with academic rigour, and is probably the first to do so in a practical, dictionary form. Complete with the engraved portrait by K.Ia. Afanas'ev. RARE: WorldCat apparently lists just one copy, at the University of Oregon. (2)
