Imprisoned in a monastery he had been released by the second False Dmitrii and named patriarch in 1609, although he was not canonically enthroned until 1619. Michael was elected Tsar on 21 February 1613, aged 17, his early reign dominated by his father. Michael married firstly, Princess Maria Vladimirovna Dolgorukova in 1624, who died four months later, and in 1626 to Evdokia Luk'ianovna Streshneva, by whom he had ten children.
