Gramota [manuscript document] given with the advice of the Patriarch Filaret, referring to all Orthodox christians having taken up arms against their enemies, Polish and Lithuanians, Moscow, 9 May 7130 [1622], with subscription at foot in another hand.
One page, 2° (520 x 372mm) Historiated initial 'B' in gold and black for the opening phrase 'Bozheiu milostiu' [By grace of God], 54 lines in cursive 'skoropis' with the usual abbreviations, with title on the reverse. (Tears with loss and restoration mainly to the right side, discolouration). With original wax seal with the double-headed eagle and St. George (repaired).
RARE GRAMOTA FROM THE REIGN OF THE FIRST ROMANOV TSAR. Michael's election at the age of 17 in 1613 was engineered by his father, who had been exiled by Boris Godunov. His election as patriarch enabled him to continue to be a considerable influence over state policy for the rest of his life. Intervention by the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Swedes in Russian affairs during the Time of Troubles culminated with the capture by the former of the city of Moscow, the crowning of two usurpers masquerading as the murdered son of Ivan the Terrible, Dimitrii, before the invaders were driven out.
