THE LEUCHTENBERG COPY. Speranskii, the close and powerful advisor of both Alexander I and his brother Nicholas I, here surveys the historical basis for the codification of Russian law -- a monumental project with which he had been tasked by Nicholas I. Duke Maximilian married Grand Duchess Mariia Nikolaevna, eldest and favourite daughter of Nicholas I. Translated by the author from his own Russian edition of the same year.
