NICHOLAS II'S COPY IN A BINDING APPLIED WITH SILVER, from his library at Alexander Palace. The songbook for a gathering in June 1896 at Il'inskoe Palace, residence of Nicholas's uncle Grand Duke Sergei Aleksandrovich (1857-1905), Governor General of Moscow and brother of Alexander III. The popular songs collected in this book are all in German, a number by Silcher and Mendelssohn, perhaps reflecting the taste of Sergei's wife, Princess Elisabeth of Hesse and by Rhine.
