8° (242 x 151mm). Contemporary green leather, flat spine gilt, sides with a gilt scrolling border, gilt edges, white moiré-style endpapers (front board discoloured along top- and fore-edges, endpapers with some discolouration). Provenance: Grand Duchess Mariia Nikolaevna (1819-1876; by repute) -- Erasmushaus, Basel (sold as part of the Leuchtenberg Library).

FIRST EDITION, ALMOST CERTAINLY MARIIA NIKOLAEVNA'S COPY. The book was earlier sold as part of the Leuchtenberg Library; but as it was published after Maximilian's death and is without his bookplate, it is likely that this book in fact belonged to his widow Grand Duchess Mariia Nikolaevna, eldest and favourite daughter of Nicholas I. Nikolai Gogol lived his last years at the house of Count Tolstoi, Chief Procurator of the Holy Synod.
