TRADESCANT, John, the elder -- HAMEL, Joseph. 'Tradescant der Aeltere 1618 in Russland' in Recueil des actes de la séance publique de l'Académie impériale des sciences de Saint-Petersbourg tenue le 29 décembre 1845. St. Petersburg and Leipzig: sold by Eggers and Voss, 1847.
4° (260 x 208mm). Lithographed portrait frontispiece of Tradescant after Malevsky, on china paper, folding engraved map of Lapland and the White Sea. Contemporary green straight-grained morocco, spine gilt, sides with gilt scrolling border, edges gilt, yellow moiré-style endpapers (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: Alexander II of Russia (bookplate; stamp with manuscript inventory number 1907) -- Simon Finch, London (pencilled stock code).
FIRST EDITION. ALEXANDER II'S COPY FROM HIS LIBRARY AT GATCHINA PALACE, with his bookplate and the Gatchina stamp. Tradescant's Wunderkammer formed the core of Oxford's Ashmolean Museum. During his researches in the museum Hamel discovered the apparently previously unpublished manuscript by Tradescant of an early voyage to Northern Russia: 'A Voiag of ambasad [to Russia] ondertaken by Dudlie Digges'. Hamel publishes it here, alongside a history of the commercial intercourse between Russian and Britain. Tradescant's text comprises 'the earliest extant account of the plants of Russia' (DNB).
