An early edition of the immensely popular allegorical dream-poem about love, 'the text-book of all lovers' (Bourdillon). Undated, it was printed by Deprez for 5 different publishers, the issues differing only in the publisher's name and device on the title (supplied here in facsimile reproducing a Petit issue). The woodcuts first appeared in Lyons editions as the second series to illustrate the Roman de la Rose, but are the earliest 'with any pretensions to beauty' (Davies). This is their last appearance, and several from the original set are omitted. Cf. Hogberg, L'edition du Roman de la Rose par Nicholas Deprez, 1925; C 5149; Pell Ms 10240; Bourdillon G (calling for 87 woodcuts); Walsh 3736a; Brunet III, 1173; Davies Murray French 324; Tchemerzine VI, 238; Goff R-313.
