FIRST (PREFERRED) FRENCH EDITION OF THIS LANDMARK OF EROTIC LITERATURE, and a remarkable record of daily life in the 18th century. It was preceded only by excerpts published serially in Urania, and by the expurgated edition in German by Schütz. This remained the best edition for more than a hundred years, when Brockhaus made the manuscript available around 1960. This edition 'is by far the most satisfactory and complete text which we possess, and is the one on which most subsequent editions have been based. It is properly speaking the first French edition [since it used the French manuscript, whereas an 1825 piracy was translated into French from the Schütz edition] and is considerably rarer than the first German edition' (Childs). A VERY GOOD COPY IN A CONTEMPORARY BINDING. Rives Childs B.I, 9; Pollio Casanova, G. (6)
