Dayes became a student at the Royal Academy in 1780 and exhibited there from 1786-1804, and at the Society of Artists in 1790 and 1791. He is best remembered today as the artist who taught Thomas Girtin, and whose style of drawing landscape had a strong influence on the young J.M.W. Turner, and he therefore played an important role in guiding the future direction of English landscape painting.
