Lot Essay

The present drawing is close to the work of J.M.W. Turner and Thomas Girtin. Along with other artists such as John Sell Cotman, William Henry Hunt and John Laporte, they met at the drawing academy of Dr Monro, of whom J.R. Cozens was a patient. Monro, a gifted amateur artist and collector, encouraged artists to meet at his houses in London and Bushey to copy his drawings of the early masters and Cozens.
