Lot Essay

cf. Exhibition catalogue, Bordeaux Art Deco, Musée des Arts Décoratifs de la Ville de Bordeaux, Bordeaux, 1979, pl. no. 39 for an image of the complete oil on canvas maquette for the fresco at the Bourse du Travail.

This splendid drawing is either a preliminary study for, or, more likely, a reprise of the figure of Bacchus from the extreme right of La Gloire de Bordeaux. Either way, Dupas has made of it an independent work that perfectly distils his compositional and technical skills as a draughtsman. The drawing is characterized by the vigorous, authoritative rendering of the male figure, achieved through judicious elimination and formal exaggeration. The subtly graduated modeling situates this among the finest works from the artist's portfolio.
Professor Robert Coustet
