A FRENCH GILT-BRASS AND ONYX STRIKING TABLE REGULATOR WITH PERPETUAL CALENDAR AND MOONPHASE DIAL
MASTER OF TIME The traditional focus of a room has for centuries been the fireplace and its chimneypiece, with a mantel getting ever larger throughout the 19th century and positively groaning with ornaments and trophies in Edwardian times. The focus of the shelf is the clock to the centre which dictates the decoration to its flanks. The beauty of a clock can also be that focus for any room in the home; a Georgian table clock for the study or library, perhaps the addition of a moonphase dial as with the clock by Howell (lot 153); a porcelain mounted timepiece for the bedroom; or an architectural longcase clock for the hall or entrance.
