Lot Essay

John Piper produced a distinct series of landscape (and seascape) collages which were first exhibited in Bear Lane Gallery, Oxford in 1961. Almost all were based on subjects in Brittany. Although the present work is closely related to the Brittany series, both the palette and composition suggest that it is based on a Pembrokeshire subject, perhaps the bay at Flimston, and that it dates from 1962-3.
