THREE HARDSTONE SNUFF BOTTLES
1750-1900
The first, 1760-1880, is a carved quartzite bottle of tapering rectangular form, cleverly carved on one side utilizing the orange markings with Shoulao holding a peach and seated beside a deer under a peach tree while watching a crane in flight in the distance. The mouth is bound in gilt metal. The second, 1760-1900, is a tapering ovoid 'puddingstone' bottle mounted with a metal collar and neck. The stone is suffused with a striking pattern of rounded pebbles of grey, ochre, brown and red color amidst numerous smaller pebble-like inclusions. The third, possibly Imperial, 1750-1840, is a faceted chalcedony bottle of octagonal form. Both sides are carved with raised faceted panels containing a central yinyang symbol and the Eight Trigrams.
