AN UNUSUAL PAIR OF CARVED RED LACQUER PEACH-FORM BOXES AND COVERS
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)
The cover of each box is finely carved with a different scene of a seated scholar holding a fan, and an attendant nearby, in a landscape setting within a border of flowers and above a wide band of eight peaches reserved on a dense, intricate ground of leaves and buds on the sides, which is repeated on the sides of the box above petal lappet and key-fret borders. The interior and recessed base are covered in black lacquer.

Lot Essay

Compare the smaller (12.7 cm. wide) covered peach-shaped box dated late 18th-early 19th century, that is similarly decorated on the cover with a figural scene and with similar peach decoration around the sides, illustrated by S. Kwan in Chinese Lacquer, Hong Kong, 2010, pp. 328-9, no. 122.
