PORTILLA, Francisco de la and El maestro ISLA. Regla de la orden y cavalleria de S. Santiago de la Espada. Antwerp: Plantin, 1598. 8° (178 x 119mm). Engraved vignette on title, full-page engraved arms on A6v, printer's device at end, woodcut initials. (Some small stains, occasional browning and soiling, first quire washed and last leaf re-attached.) 19th-century calf gilt, gilt spine and edges (edges lightly rubbed). Provenance: purchased from José Porter, 1941.
The Order of Santiago was founded in the 12th century. It owes its name to the patron saint of Galicia and Spain under whose banner the Christians of Galicia and Asturias began in the 9th century to combat and drive back the arabs from the Iberian Peninsula.
