Lot Essay

The present scene depicts a Buddhist heavenly assembly, which represents the possibility of salvation and rebirth in paradise. The lotus flower, held in this scene by Buddha, symbolizes purity and rebirth. Scenes of figures being reborn from lotus flowers in the ponds of the western paradise of Amitabha Buddha have been depicted in Chinese art beginning in the sixth century. A very similar panel was sold at Christie's New York, 24 March 2011, lot 1346.
