A PAIR OF UNUSUAL RELIEF-DECORATED AUBERGINE-GROUND BOTTLE VASES
LATE QING DYNASTY, LATE 19TH-EARLY 20TH CENTURY
Each is applied with a pomegranate tree bearing nine ripe fruit. The tree trunk and branches and a small bat on the shoulder are glazed turquoise, while the fruit and leaves are covered with a pale green-toned clear glaze, all of which are reserved on the aubergine ground that continues over the mouth rim. There is an apocryphal Qianlong seal mark carved on the unglazed base. Together with Princess Der Ling's memoir, Two Years in the Forbidden City, New York, Moffat, Yard and Company, 1911. (3)
