STRABO (64/63 B.C. - ca. 21 A.D.). Geographicorum commentrarii. Basel: Valentin Curio, 1523.
2o (329 x 208 mm). Elaborate woodcut title border by Jacob Faber, 2 elaborate woodcut borders printed from four blocks and attributed to an anonymous master from the circle of Hans Baldung Grien, numerous head-pieces, numerous large woodcut initials by Holbein, woodcut printer's device at end. (Some occasional minor browning.) Contemporary Italian, probably Bolognese, russet gold- and blind-tooled goatskin, wide blind-tooled border of roll-tools and fillets forming two inner compartments, stamped with floral designs in gilt, author's name gilt-lettered on upper cover, smooth spine in five compartments (light rubbing to joints and corners). Provenance: acquired from Gilhofer and Raunchburg, 1971.
FIRST EDITION of Strabo's Geography, edited by Conrad Heresbach's (1496-1576), one of the earliest and most important scientific treatises of historical geography. Together with Ptolemy and Solinus, Strabo's only surviving work, the Geography constituted the first attempt at a unified treatise of geographical knowledge. The most remarkable feature of this edition are the large Roman majuscule woodcut initials incorporate playing putti or children by Hans Holbein and the woodcut borders by Jacob Faber and the anonymous master from the circle of Baldung.
