Comprising the 11th juz', Arabic manuscript on buff paper, 28ff. plus 4 fly-leaves, each folio with 7ll. of elegant black rayhani, gold and polychrome verse roundels, sura headings in gold within cartouches with gold and polychrome illumination, text panels within gold and polychrome rules, marginal medallions in gold and polychrome, the word Allah highlighted in gold throughout, opening bifolium with gold and polychrome illumination and text in alternating black and gold in clouds reserved against similarly illuminated ground, in brown morocco with large panel of stamped and tooled gilded decoration, the doublures decorated with gilded découpé arabesque spandrels and central medallion over blue, green and yellow paper, small areas of restoration to the lower margin of some of the folios not affecting the text or illumination

Lot Essay

A series of very similar 17th century Safavid Qur'an juz' have been sold in these Rooms, 8 April 2008, lot 193 and 7 October 2008, lot 310. Others have sold in Sotheby's, London, 28 April 1993, lot 133 and 13 Octrober 1989, lot 92. This Qur'an juz' is very closely related in terms of calligraphy but there are slight variations in the illumination from the group mentioned above.
