Lot Essay
The panels include the following:
1. A panel signed by al-Sayyid Salih [known] as Hafiz al-Qur'an. Employed in the royal palace, al-Sayyid Salih is recorded as being one of the great calligraphers of his age. Because of the soundness of his script, he was known as Çemsir or 'Boxwood', as it was counted as the sturdiest of trees. He died in AH 1240/1824-25 AD. 2. A panel signed by Mustafa al-Ayyubi. If this is Soyulcuzade Mustafa Eyyubi, he was the teacher of Hafiz Osman. A single Qur'an in his hand survives in the Chester Beatty Library. A qita by him, as well as a short biography are published in Letters in Gold, exhibition catalogue, New York, 1998, p.68.
3. A panel signed by Rashid and dated AH 1085/1674-75 AD. Rashid, also known as Siyahi Mollasi, is renowned as a master of ta'liq script. He died in AH 1142/1729-30 AD.
4. A panel signed by Mehmet Sehri and dated AH 1153/1740-41 AD. He obtained his ijaza from Mehmet Giridi and died in AH 1153, the year this calligraphy was copied, at the young age of 33 (Rado, op.cit., p.141).
5. A panel signed al-Sayyid Mehmet Bayazid-Zade
6. A panel signed Mehmet al-Shahri and dated AH 1103/1691-92 AD.
