Lot Essay

This Par panel is part of a tradition of large-scale horizontal paintings used to provide a background for storytelling during ritual all-night performance. The hero-god depicted in this panel is either Pabuji or Dev Narayana, two Rajasthani heroes thought to be incarnations of Vishnu.

For a discussion on these paintings see Barbara Rossi, From the Ocean of Painting, India's Popular Paintings 1589 to the Present, Oxford, 1998, p.137-45.
