QAJAR IRAN, 19TH CENTURY
Comprising a fine circular silver box engraved with a large calligraphic medallion with interlocking calligraphy in thuluth script; and two octagonal cases, each engraved with religious inscriptions, one parcel-gilt and nielloed, each with clasp and suspension loops, in good condition

Lot Essay

These cases are likely to have housed a miniature Qur'an of the same shape. The hanging loops suggest that they were probably carried as an amulet around the belt. An almost identicall box to the one illustrated top left, although in gold, is published in Spirit & Life, Masterpieces of Islamic Art from the Aga Khan Museum Collection, Geneva, 2007, cat.18, p.44.
