A VENETIAN SCHIAVONA
17TH CENTURY
With broad flat double-edged blade struck with the letter 'S' and cut with three short fullers on each side, characteristic iron basket-hilt of flattened bars, one struck with a mark, inner thumb-ring, short rear-quillon, pierced shield-shaped pommel with central boss on each side and struck with a mark on one side, and original leather-covered wooden grip with spiral binding, the marks are almost certainly the Venetian winged lion (shallow surface corrosion throughout)
