AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURED NECK-AMPHORA
GROUP OF MUNICH 1501, CIRCA 520 B.C.
Both sides with a Gigantomachy, one with Athena at the center facing left, wearing a high-crested helmet and a snaky aegis, a spear in her raised right hand, in combat with a Giant moving to the left and looking back, armed in a double-crested Corinthian helmet, a circular shield, a corslet, a spear and a sheathed sword on a baldric, a Giant to the right, moving right, armed in a crested Corinthian helmet, a Boeotian shield, a corslet, a spear and a sheathed sword on a baldric; the other side with Poseidon to the left, hoisting the Island of Nisyros on his left shoulder, preparing to drop it on the Giant Polybotes, the bearded god to the left facing right, his trident in his lowered right hand, a sheathed sword hanging from his baldric, Polybotes kneeling at the center, his body facing right, looking back, wearing a high-crested Corinthian helmet, armed with a corslet, a circular shield with a lion as the blazon, a spear held horizontally in both hands, a Giant to the right facing Poseidon, armed in a crested Corinthian helmet, a corslet, a circular shield and a spear held horizontally in both hands; double palmette and lotus chain on the neck, alternating red and black tongues on the shoulders, lotus-bud chain encircling below, rays above the foot, a quatrefoil of palmettes, lotus buds, and spiralling tendrils below each triple-reeded handle, details in added white and red; a graffito on the underside of the foot
