AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURED NECK-AMPHORA
GROUP OF MUNICH 1501, CIRCA 520 B.C.
One side with two warriors on horseback above a fallen hoplite, the horsemen each wearing a Thracian cloak (zeira) and armed with two spears and a crested Corinthian helmet, that to the right with a high crest, the facing horses rearing, the hoplite falling back and looking down, armed with a high-crested Corinthian helmet, a circular shield, a spear, a corslet and a sheathed sword; the other side with Dionysos flanked by a dancing satyr and maenad, the maenad to the left with her left leg and arm raised, her right arm bent acutely and held forward at her side, the bearded satyr to the right with his left leg bent up, the bearded god at the center facing right and looking back, a wreath in his hair, a rhyton in his raised left hand, grape vines with leaves and clusters issuing from his right hand; alternating black and red tongues on the shoulders, double palmette and lotus chain on the neck, lotus-bud chain encircling below, rays above the foot, a quatrefoil of palmettes, lotus buds, and spiralling tendrils below each triple-reeded handle, details in added white and red
