AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURED AMPHORA (TYPE B)
ATTRIBUTED TO GROUP E, CIRCA 520 B.C.
One side with a charioteer driving a quadriga to the right, his companion leaping from the box, his left foot on the chariot pole, wearing a short chiton, armed in a corslet and a high-crested Corinthian helmet, a Boeotian shield in his left hand, a spear in his upraised right, a fallen warrior below the horses, similarly armed, his circular shield above his knees, pseudo inscriptions in the field, a double palmette and lotus chain above; the other side centered by Dionysos facing right, wearing a chiton and a himation, a vine wreath in his hair, a rhyton in his left hand, an ivy branch in his right, a veiled maenad standing before him, a gesticulating nude satyr to the right, moving right, his head thrown back, two similar satyrs to the left, one moving right, one moving left with his head turned back, a band of double palmette chain above; rays above the foot, details in added white and red, graffiti on the underside of the foot
