Works of art from this region in African are rare, as the conversion to Islam occurred as early as the seventeenth century. The tradition of creating these small figures and, occasionally, equestrian figures remained. A related figure, also still with beads intact, is in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum (22.1456), acquired in 1922. See also Cameron, Isn't S/HE a Doll?, 1996, pp.5 and passim for a related figure in the Horstmann Collection, formerly in the Tara Collection and an overview of the 'doll' concept in Africa.
