Lot Essay

This pair of stools is exceptional in its simple and elegant form and relates closely to a number of zitan stools in the Palace Museum, Beijing. Compare to a pair of zitan square stools carved with more elaborate designs, incorporating a lotus motif on the legs and a base stretcher, illustrated by Tian Jiaqing, Classic Chinese Furniture of the Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong, 1996, p. 64, pl. 4.
