A SET OF FOUR HARDWOOD SPINDLE-BACK ARMCHAIRS, MEIGUIYI
QING DYNASTY, LATE 19TH CENTURY
After a bamboo prototype, each with a humpback toprail supported on rounded posts extending to the back legs and flanking the slightly curved round section spindles, with a matching series of spindles bracing stepped rectangular arms. The broad rectangular frame with hard seat is set above plain aprons and spandrels. Each chair is supported on legs of square section joined by stepped stretchers and the footrest above a plain apron.

Compare to the single chair in the Lan Xianmai Collection, illustrated by C. Evarts, et al., Splendor of Style: Classical Furniture of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Taipei, 1999, p. 93; and a pair included in Nicholas Grindley, Exhibition at Kate Ganz, New York, March 2000, no. 9.

A pair of late 18th century huali chairs of very similar shape and size but with a mat seat, from the collection of Dr. Frank Stanton, was sold at Christie's New York, 21 March 1997, lot 203. Another hongmu pair with humpback stretchers in place of plain aprons was sold at Christie's London, 11 May 2010, lot 192.
