Lot Essay

Compare to a Qianlong zitan bed inlaid with ceramic panels enamelled with flowers and butterflies, from the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in Furniture of the Ming and Qing Dynasties (II), The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 2002, pl. 6. Also see two inset stools in the form of a fan sharing the 'flower and butterfly' ceramic top and bi-shaped aprons found on the present table, illustrated by Tian Jiaqing, Classic Chinese Furniture of the Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong, 1996, p. 62, pl. 3.

The composition of the flowers and insects on the ceramic top is reminiscent of the English botanical watercolours of the early 19th century. The theme was also popular among early Qing famille rose wares, including two dishes and a water pot dated to the Kangxi period, illustrated in Porcelains with Cloisonne Enamel Decoration and Famille Rose Decoration, The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 1999, pp. 50-52, pls. 41-43.
