The battle depicted here takes root in the flee of Muhammad Shah who after having conspired against 'Ala al-Din Khilji, sought shelter and protection by Raja Hamir Hath, the rajput ruler of Ranathambor. After an unsuccesful initial confrontation on the banks of the river Banas, 'Ala al-Din Khilji laid siege to the fort and made demands for Muhammad Shah to be handed over which Raja Hamir Hath declined despite a weakened army and plotting officers. Ultimately, Ranathambor's women commited ritual suicide and the warriors faced 'Ala al-Din Khilji's armies only to be defeated. Upon the fall of the fort, Muhammad Shah was brought to the Sultan where he drew his dagger and killed himself. 'Ala al-Din ordered the execution of Raja Hamir Hath's officers.
