Of long cylindrical form, the repoussé decoration with dense foliate ground inhabited by parakeets, peacocks and other exotic birds, the central cartouche engraved "George Brown Esqr from Sabaragamuwa Planters Association", one of the rounded extremities opening to reveal a compartment in which is kept an illuminated certificate bearing the name of George Brown, on modern wooden stand

Lot Essay

The certificate kept in this document holder is from the Sabaragamuwa Planters Association and was delivered to George Brown as a recognition of his "long and valuable services to this association". It is dated April 1926 and was made in Ratnapura.

George Brown was chairman of the Planters Association of Ceylon. He contributed to the introduction of S.E.N. Nicholas, Planter's Handbook, Labour in Ceylon, Colombo 1926. His words were reported briefly in the Social and Personal column of the Straight Times , 21 October 1926, p.8 (https://newspapers.nl.sg/Digitised/Page/straitstimes19261021-1.1.8.aspx )
