These pineapple finials correspond to a pattern illustrated in Eleanor Coade's Etching of Coade's Artificial Stone Manufactory, 1778, pl.127. Pineapples were a symbol of hospitality and often appear on gate-piers. A set of twelve pineapple finials can be seen at Ham House, Surrey, with impressed stamps 'Coade and Sealy, Lambeth 1800'.
