MARGUERITE D'NAVARRE (Queen consort, 1492-1549). Marguerites de la Marguerite des Princesses, Tres illustre Royne de Navarre. Paris: Jean Ruelle, 1558. 2 parts in one, 16° (115 x 75mm). Woodcut on title, woodcut head-pieces, ornaments and initials. (Lower margin of title replaced just touching date, small marginal repairs to last 3 leaves, occasional soiling.) Contemporary French paneled calf, gilt center- and corner ornaments (rebacked, restored at extremities).
A rare edition of the main body of work by a humanist writer considered by some of her contemporaries as the Tenth Muse. Marguerite d'Navarre (and d'Angoulême) was patron of writers such as Rabelais as well as religious reformers such as Luther and Calvin. Her writing is informed by her humanist education while still imbued with medieval allegory. This collection contains 'La Coche', her dialogue on perfect love. The present edition reprints the first (Lyon: 1547). Cf. Brunet III, 1414. Tchemerzine 7, 388 ('très rare').
