Small 4o (173 x 140 mm.) Additional etched title and 60 etched emblems by and after Romeyn de Hooghe all hand-colored with gold. (Additional title cut round and mounted, some light mostly marginal staining.) Contemporary Dutch calf gilt (joints cracked). Provenance: acquired from John Landwehr, 1977.
FIRST EDITION of the first book illustrated by de Hooghe. The sixty etchings are headed by a numeral and motto. Among the wide variety of human types represented are soldiers, fishermen, a goldsmith, a surgeon operating on cancer, a mailman, a painter, torturers and Jewish priests; Biblical scenes and a view of Rotterdam are also included.
