A FRENCH SMALL-SWORD WITH GILT-BRASS HILT FOR AN OFFICER IN THE SERVICE OF THE KING OF FRANCE
CIRCA 1770
With blade of hollow triangular section etched towards the forte with scrollwork, the hilt comprising slightly dished oval guard engraved with a large sunburst on the inner side, short quillon-block with long quillons each with a scrolled finial, slightly swelled knuckle-guard, swelled grip, and urn-shaped pommel, the principle elements each with engraved foliage, some against a matted ground, and retaining much original gilded finish throughout, in original snakeskin-covered scabbard with gilt-brass mounts engraved en suite with the hilt, and two rings for suspension (chape and tip of scabbard missing)
