A NORTH ITALIAN ETCHED COMB MORION
LATE 16TH CENTURY
Of one piece, with skull rising to a prominent roped comb, the base of the skull encircled by a row of lining rivets with domed brass covers and brass rosette-shaped washers, leaf-shaped plume-holder, and brim with turned roped edge rising to a point fore and aft, the surface etched throughout with panels of foliage inhabited by monsters, trophies, flowers, horns, and a roundel of each side of the comb bearing a Classical portrait bust, the principle panels all against a blackened granular ground (some old repairs to skull, comb and edge of brim)
