Lot Essay
Another example of this table sold Sotheby's, New York, 24 October 2012, lot 238 ($16,250). The model can be seen in a photograph circa 1880 of the drawing room at Egerton Winthrop House, 23 East 33rd Street, New York (reproduced in A. Lewis et al. The Opulent Interiors of the Gilded Age, New York, 1987, p. 71, pl. 53). Egerton Winthrop (d. 1916) spent many years in Paris where he acquired a deep interest in French art and culture. The drawing room of his New York home was in the Louis XVI style with much of the decoration imported from France, including heavily gilded furniture reproduced from period models. The photograph shows further furniture and objects in the Louis XVI style of models known to have been made by Dasson. The Winthrope order would have been an important commission for Dasson and demonstrates the reach and appeal of the premier Parisian ébénistes of the time.
