MAJOR, Thomas (1720-1799). The Ruins of Paestum, otherwise Posidonia in Magna Graecia. London: James Dixwell, 1768. 2° (525 x 354mm). Dedication with engraved coat-of-arms, list of subscribers, 25 numbered engraved plates, 6 engraved head- and tail-pieces. (Small clean tear to top margin of X1, occasional light soiling, heavier on title.) Contemporary sheep with patterned cloth panels (extremities worn, front joint split but still holding).
FIRST ENGLISH EDITION of 'an important eighteenth-century pioneer contribution to the knowledge of Greek architecture' (Fowler). Major's work 'was larger and much more complete than any of the previous publications' (Blackmer) and it was published the same year both in English and with a French translation by J. Varennes.
