FIRST EDITION THUS, commemorating Soane's later achievements, including his work on the Houses of Parliament and the Law Courts by Westminster Hall. At this point in his life Soane was estranged from his surviving son and subjected to strong criticism from government officials and the newspapers for his Palladian Law Courts. Soane published this volume as a record of his accomplishments that he hoped would endure beyond the controversies and unhappiness of his own lifetime. Fowler p.270; Millard British, 78.
