Lot Essay

The present watercolour shows Old St. Paul's Cathedral, London towering over the smaller houses below. The spire was completed circa 1221 and was one of the tallest in Europe until it was destroyed by fire caused by a lightning strike in 1561. The fire was so fierce that it melted the cathedral's bells and the lead roof.

We are grateful to John Harris and Charles Hind for their assistance with cataloguing the group of architectural fantasies.
