Lot Essay

This architectural fantasy seems to be an idealized drawing of a monumental square bringing together various elements of classical architecture. The distant hills, poplar trees and central rotunda building, (reminiscent of the Pantheon in Rome) give this fantasy a distinctly Classical feel. Other features include two obelisks on either side of a colonnaded entrance gate.

We are grateful to John Harris and Charles Hind for their assistance with cataloguing the group of architectural fantasies.
