The supposed sitter was the daughter of John, 1st Earl Gower and his wife Lady Evelyn Pierrepont, daughter of the 1st Duke of Kingston. She married John, 3rd Earl of Waldegrave in 1751. Her sisters-in-law were famously painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds as The Ladies Waldegrave (Edinburgh, National Gallery of Scotland).
