A lacquer writing box (suzuribako) and matching stationery box (ryoshibako)
Meiji period (late 19th century), both signed Itcho (Kawanobe Itcho; 1830-1910) and with cursive monogram (kao)
Each of the boxes designed with open and closed books of literary classics; the writing box elaborately lacquered in gold, silver and colored lacquer hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, kirikane, togidashi and inlaid mother-of-pearl on a nashiji ground, the underside of the lid decorated in gold and colored lacquer hiramaki-e and takamaki-e with a fan with peony design and inro beneath a blossoming cherry branch; fitted with a slate inkstone with nashiji sides, a silver water dropper in the form of a peony flower in a leaf-edged saucer in gold and silver, and a knife, paper picker, brush and inkstick holder; the stationery box decorated en suite with a design of a lacquer box beneath a blossoming plum branch on the reverse of the lid
