A PAIR OF FAMILLE ROSE OVOID VASES
REPUBLIC PERIOD (1912-1949)
Each body is densely decorated with foliate scroll reserved on a yellow ground surrounding four shaped panels, each enclosing a 'beauty' and a poetic inscription followed by a seal, three signed Liu Zong Xun. Four small quatrefoil panels of 'antiques' are on the neck below beaded garlands pendent from the garlic mouth, and all are within decorative borders above a band of dragons contesting flaming pearls amidst rolling waves on the foot. Dragons at a similar pursuit amidst clouds are on the interior of the mouth and on the base in a roundel encircled by pale green foliate scroll reserved on a yellow ground.
9 5/8 in. (24.5 cm.) high, fabric stands, wood boxes (2)

Compare the very similarly decorated single famille rose vase, also signed Liu Zongxun, but with a flared mouth, sold at Christie's New York, 15 September 2011, lot 1669.
