NORTHERN WEI DYNASTY, DATED BY INSCRIPTION TO AD 474
The bodhisattva is shown standing in a slightly tribhanga pose atop a socle raised on a four-legged base, the raised right hand holds a willow branch and the left hand is pendent at the side and holding an amphora. The head is framed by an oval mandorla surmounted by a seated figure of Amitahba. The back is inscribed with a dated inscription, Yuanhui er nian san yue/gan dou Jiang Chong/xiang yi qu/gong yang.

Lot Essay

The inscription states that the figure was donated by Jian Chong in the third month of the second year of the Yuanhui reign, corresponding to 474 (during the Liu Song dynasty of the reign of emperor Fei Di).
